More about PSO2 Meseta Sega's next generation of Phantasy Star Online was revealed at the Tokyo Game Show, and New Genesis is shaping up to be a Substantial upgrade from the current game. There are many details to be revealed as time goes one, but a few major things like combat and the planet are much clearer. Hiro Arai from Sega was live for nearly an hour to show off footage of gameplay and talk about what new items are on the way. Not much was said about the current game and the update coming alongside NG's launch aside from the graphical update, which is looking fantastic.
Maps are no more split into areas with loading screens. NG is going to have an entirely open world from the home base to the field. The TGS footage showed off a beautiful new world that is a substantial update from the current game. Blades of grass blow in the wind, lush forests lie on the opposite side of valleys and frosty mountains could be seen in the distance. Arai mentions that distinct regions can be attained seamlessly simply by traversing the world.
It seems like this is the world Naberious in the current game, with forests being next to tundra and other areas. Areas continue to be technically split up, but there is no loading between these. While it has not been straight mentioned, an open world such as this implies there may not be single celebration places . Most shown in the footage were multi-party regions where there were other players. The cap for multi-party places continues to be lowered to eight down from twelve in the current PSO2, but who you see will differ from area to area.
Weather is making a much better comeback as it affects dynamically and can impact the battlefield, although the magnitude of the effect wasn't spoken of. Time will also change, and footage showed some nice touches like fireflies in the forests at night. There's no word on fast travel, vehicles or mounts yet, but Sega has implemented some new ways for players to move quickly across this large new world. Players will have the ability to run quicker following a dodge both in and out of battle. A blue series follows underfoot, so you will know you are doing it right once you watch it.
The other important addition to movement shown off in the initial NG trailer is the slide. It goes as far as a few of those screenshots have left it seem. Players may get to high ground and jump off to slide and get pretty damn far across the map. Like in Breath of the Wild, you will be able to make you're way up a mountain to slide away from -- but minus anything inhibiting you like endurance. It will also cause some dramatic entrances in to conflict. Sega mentioned that crafting and gathering could be getting an overhaul, and while we did not get a peek at crafting, we did see just how much nicer it would be to buy Phantasy Star Online 2 Meseta snag items in the specialty.
